Musée National des Douanes
Museum open to the world, the MND receives visitors from all walks of life. It is part of the transversality of themes and eras and welcomes all artistic mediums. This nesting museum with varied collections is like the customs: works of art, tools, archives, militaria, naturalized and seized species are found side by side.
Unique in France, the MND presents the history of Customs from Antiquity to the present day. It sheds light on the construction of the French state and its relations with the world by offering an original and unexpected rediscovery of the history of France. The collections of objects and works of art he exhibits illustrate the inseparable link between state and customs. They retrace the influence of protectionist or liberal economic theories, the links forged with the army, the thousand and one forms of the fight against smuggling, the development of foreign trade and transport, as well as the work of agents. Finally, the route opens onto the customs missions of modern and contemporary times.
Temporary exhibitions allow museum enhancement of the collections. They highlight various themes: itineraries of famous people or major historical periods, shedding light on the customs officers' tools or their missions.
The MND takes part in all major local, national and international cultural events. Its Historical Documentation Center is an ideal interlocutor for students, researchers, authors or individuals interested in the history of customs and foreign trade.
The MND is a public museum created by the General Directorate of Customs and Indirect Rights in 1984. Having become a National Competence Service in 2011, it is now developing under the supervision of the Ministry of the Economy, Finance and Recovery.
