Palais Gallien
A little away from the city center stands the oldest vestige of Bordeaux
You can no longer hear the roar of wild beasts, nor the glorious cries of gladiators. But the ruins of this amphitheater still speak of Burdigala (the name of Bordeaux in Roman times) when the city was flourishing.
A monumental door still rises and some arches and departures of walls are included in the gardens, the surrounding houses and even in the cellars!
On its wooden bleachers, which have now disappeared, 20,000 spectators (double the population at the time) could watch the games.
In the 17th century, the Gallien Palace served as a refuge for mobsters and public girls ... rumor had it the meeting place for witches before a mayor of the Revolution transformed it into a public career.
