With its Grand Place lined with cafés and restaurants, the town is very pleasant and lively. Today, Halle is famous for its carnival which attracts crowds, but for almost seven centuries, Halle attracted crowds of pilgrims who came to meet the famous black Madonna in its St. Martin's basilica.
