Whether or not it’s in all the guides, the sloping lock of Ronquières nevertheless constitutes an impressive technical feat. Built between 1960 and 1968 on the canal linking Brussels to Charleroi, the incline plane uses water-filled containers as counterweights to haul huge barges up a slow rise of 68 meters from the bottom to the top of the inclined plane. This passage avoids the equivalent of 18 passages of locks and a day of navigation. The building that straddles the incline offers unobstructed views to visitors.
