Information

In the 2nd century, the Romans protected Tongeren with thick walls, 4.5 km long. In the Middle Ages, the city was equipped with more substantial walls, partially built on the Roman walls, and punctuated by six gates. One of them, the Moerenpoort (1379), or Visée Gate, houses a small museum (free of charge) on the history of the walls. Climbing to the top of the gate offers a beautiful view of the city. Near the beguinage, the Drapers' Tower was also part of the wall.
